# Age verification by ID document

> Reads the date of birth from the identity document and compares the age with your minimum age.

Age verification by ID document decides age from the date of birth printed on an identity document, with the same capture and checks as KYC.

## Where it runs

| Workspace type | Age from the document |
| - | - |
| Age verification by ID document | Yes, with the minimum age you set: any age from 16 to 25 |
| Facial age estimation | When the selfie can't confirm 18+, with a minimum age of 18 |
| Identity (KYC) | No age rule |

## How it works

1. The person photographs their document and takes a selfie.
2. The document is checked as in [Identity (KYC)](/core-technology/id-verification), and the selfie is matched to its portrait as in [Face match](/core-technology/face-match).
3. The date of birth is read from the document and the person's age today is compared with the minimum age.

Because the age comes from the document, it is only as reliable as the document: the authenticity and face-match checks are what make it hold.

## In the API and the webhook

A person under the minimum age is declined with `verification.age_threshold.failed`. The date of birth is returned by `GET /v1/verifications/{id}/document`, with the first and last name, the document number, the document type and the issuing country. Age workspaces do not receive the other fields. The webhook carries the same `document` object.

## Reasons

| Code | Outcome |
| - | - |
| `verification.age_threshold.failed` | Declined |

Every document reason from [Identity (KYC)](/core-technology/id-verification) also applies.

## What the person is asked to do

Nothing beyond the document and selfie capture. An underage person is declined; there is no retry that could change a date of birth.
