# Face match

> Compares the selfie with the portrait on the identity document.

A genuine document proves little if the person holding it is someone else. Face match compares the live selfie with the portrait printed on the identity document.

## Where it runs

| Workspace type | Face match |
| - | - |
| Identity (KYC) | Yes |
| Age verification by ID document | Yes |
| Facial age estimation | Only when it falls back to a document |

## How it works

The portrait is found on the document's front side and compared with the selfie. The comparison needs a usable portrait: when none is found, or it is too small, angled or covered, the person is asked to retake the document rather than being declined.

## In the API and the webhook

A mismatch declines the verification with `document.face.mismatch`. Nothing else is returned: the similarity itself is not exposed.

## Reasons

| Code | Outcome |
| - | - |
| `document.face.mismatch` | Declined |
| `document.face.match_insufficient_quality` | Resubmission requested |
| `document.front.face.not_found` | Resubmission requested |
| `document.front.face.too_small` | Resubmission requested |
| `document.front.face.not_clear` | Resubmission requested |
| `document.front.face.angle_incorrect` | Resubmission requested |
| `document.front.face.occluded` | Resubmission requested |

## What the person is asked to do

Retake the document's front side flat, in focus and without glare over the portrait, or retake the selfie facing the camera.
