# Supported documents

> Identity documents from 190+ countries and territories: passports, ID cards, driver's licences and residence permits.

ProofAge accepts identity documents from **190+ countries and territories**.

| Document | Sides the person photographs |
| - | - |
| Passport | The photo page |
| National ID card | Front and back |
| Driver's licence | Front and back |
| Residence permit | Front and back |

The person chooses the document type in the widget; with the API, send it as `document` on the upload (`passport`, `id`, `driver_license`, `residence_permit`). See [Uploading media](/integration/web/uploading-media).

## What makes a document usable

* It is an original identity document, photographed live: not a photocopy, a scan, or a photo on a screen.
* It is not damaged: not torn, cut or folded over its text.
* It shows the holder's photo, full name and date of birth, readable.
* It has not expired, unless the workspace allows expired documents. See [Workspaces and keys](/console/workspaces-and-keys#settings).

When a document cannot be used, the person is asked for a clearer photo or another document. See [Identity (KYC)](/core-technology/id-verification).
