The Identity (KYC) check confirms that a person is who their identity document says they are. It has three parts: The document checks on this page also run in Age verification by ID document, and in a Facial age estimation that asks for an ID.

Supported documents

Identity documents from 190+ countries and territories: passports, national ID cards, driving licences and residence permits. See Supported documents.

Where it runs

What is checked on the document

  • The capture: the whole document is in the frame, in focus, without glare, and the text is readable. Problems here ask the person to retake it.
  • Authenticity: the image is a real document, not a screen, a print or a photo of a photo, and shows no signs of editing, replaced portraits or overlaid text.
  • Condition: the document is not torn, cut or folded over its text.
  • Data: the fields the check needs are present, and the document is not expired, unless the workspace accepts expired documents.
  • The holder: the selfie matches the portrait; see Face match.

Workspace setting

Allow expired documents (off by default) accepts documents past their expiry date. With it off, an expired document asks the person for another one.

In the API and the webhook

GET /v1/verifications/{id}/document returns what was read (the document type and issuing country, and eleven fields: names, date of birth, sex, nationality, place of birth, address, document number, issue and expiry dates) and the images; see Reading results. The webhook carries the same document object, without the images; see Webhooks. A failed check sets the verification’s reason.

Reasons

Spoofed document images are covered on Liveness and anti-spoofing; every code is in Decision reasons.

What the person is asked to do

Photograph the document flat on a plain surface, the whole document in the frame, in good light without glare. If the document is damaged or expired, use another one.
